1. Structure and Capacity
The hospital section is a full, modern hospital designed to be functional and sterile, regardless of the local port conditions.
Operating Rooms (ORs): The ship feature multiple operating rooms. For instance, the Ship has six operating rooms.
Wards and Beds: They have dedicated hospital wards with a significant patient capacity. we can hold over 100 beds for post-operative recovery.
Clinical Spaces: The facilities include:
Recovery Wards and Intensive Care Units (ICUs).
Outpatient Clinics and Screening spaces.
Laboratory, Pharmacy, and Radiology services (including CT scanners).
Sterilization and supply departments.
Crew Clinic: There is a separate, smaller clinic on board dedicated to the medical and dental needs of the volunteer crew.
2. Services and Specializations
The care provided is focused on essential surgical needs that address the highest burden of disease in the regions they serve. All services are provided free of charge.
The typical surgical specialties include:
Oral and Maxillofacial: Correcting severe facial tumors, cleft lip/palate, and traumatic injuries.
Ophthalmic: Cataract removal and other vision-restoring procedures.
General Surgery: Hernia repairs, thyroid procedures, and mass removals.
Pediatric Orthopedics: Correcting severe club feet, bowed legs, and other skeletal deformities in children.
Plastics and Reconstructive: Procedures for severe burn contractures and other debilitating disfigurements.
Women’s Health: Fistula repair (Urogynecologic) and other essential gynecological surgeries.
Dental Care: Providing dental restoration and extraction services.
3. Training and Legacy
Beyond performing surgeries, a core function of the hospital ship is to leave a lasting legacy in the host country. The on-board facilities are used as a teaching environment where local healthcare professionals (surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologists) receive intensive mentoring and training from the volunteer staff. This capacity building is intended to strengthen the nation’s own healthcare system long after the ship departs.
